Our Instructors
Across the board, when we asked our students what they love about ZBK the top answer was THE SENSEIS. The majority of our students listed the balance between hard work and fun as what makes our team of instructors the best. We invite you to learn more about each of them here.

Sensei Jony Martinez
The heart of the ZBK family!

His unwavering passion for teaching children and elevating the sport to new heights is truly incomparable. Today, he has become one of the most sought-after judges for all levels of competition, thanks to his extensive experience and deep understanding of the sport. Senpai Rony Vega
He began his journey in Karate in 2008, initially training under the guidance of Sensei Jony. However, due to various personal life commitments and responsibilities that arose over the years, his practice was somewhat inconsistent. Despite these challenges, he has made a strong return to the dojo and is fully dedicated to his training since 2021. His deep passion for teaching children, combined with his focus on character development and discipline, greatly contributes to a well-rounded and nurturing environment at the karate school.
In addition to his teaching role, he also holds the position of Vice-President at the ZBK Karate Team, where he participates in various initiatives to promote the art of karate and enhance the experience for all students.
Praise for Senpai Rony:
"Senpai Rony always knows how to lend a hand. He has a knack for identifying precisely where my child could use a bit of support and is always ready to assist!"
Sensei Matthew Sauers
In August 2016, he became part of the Zen Bushido Kan (ZBK) family, accompanied by his two daughters. What began as a pursuit of physical exercise through Karate, after a long period of inactivity, has evolved into a profound transformation of mind, body, and spirit. Throughout the years, he has participated in competitions both locally and nationally, developing a deep appreciation for Karate as both an art form and a sport. As a senpai and eventually a sensei, he has devoted significant time to training individuals of all ages, fostering a journey of dedication and perseverance that can benefit a lifetime. Giving back to the community holds the utmost importance in his life, and karate is one way he can live that out. Under the guidance of Sensei Jony, karate has become a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone, regardless of age. He looks forward to continuing this journey with ZBK for many more years to come.
Praise for Sensei Matthew:
"Sensei Matthew is my favorite ZBK instructor because he helps a lot and is very kind."

Sensei Kiarah Nolasco
She has been practicing Karate since 2012, and throughout these years, she has not only honed her skills but has also dedicated a significant portion of her time to helping teach Karate to other students in the dojo. This commitment to sharing her knowledge demonstrates her passion for the martial art and her desire to instill the same love for Karate in her students. Whenever parents or students have any questions and Sensei Jony is unavailable, she steps in wholeheartedly, offering her assistance and expertise. Additionally, she plays a vital role in supporting students during tournaments, even stepping up to coach them for various competitions when necessary. Over the years, she has competed in numerous tournaments, including prestigious events like the USA Open, which is a qualifier for nationals, and she has proudly represented herself at national competitions as well. Although she may be regarded as one of the stricter senseis, her unwavering dedication to teaching children and guiding them in their Karate journey is evident in everything she does, as she strives to bring out their best potential.
Praise for Sensei Kiarah:
"Sensei Kiarah is my favorite ZBK instructor because she is always helping. She is great."
"I like Sensei Kiarah because she is strict and straight to the point."
Sensei Evelyn Adan
She has been practicing karate since 2011, and throughout the years, it has truly been an incredible journey filled with challenges and triumphs, but she believes that every moment and effort has been worth it in the end. Karate has imparted valuable lessons that extend far beyond the dojo, teaching her crucial skills such as self-defense, which empowers her to feel safe and confident in her surroundings. It has also instilled in her a strong sense of patience, discipline, and respect—not only for her instructors and peers but for herself as well. This experience has become more than just being part of a team; it's like being embraced by a large, supportive family where bonds are deepened through shared goals and experiences, creating lasting friendships along the way.
Praise for Sensei Evelyn:
"Sensei Evelyn is always patient. She takes karate very seriously, but her heart shines through everything she does. I am so glad she is there to help the kids."

Sensei Ricky Jauregui
He has been practicing karate diligently since April 2010. This makes him one of the oldest members of the dojo but also one of the pioneers, being among the first to achieve the esteemed rank of Shodan for the school. Outside of his martial arts journey, he holds a bachelor's degree in Film and Television from California State University, Fullerton, where he honed his skills in storytelling and visual communication. His dedication extends beyond his personal achievements; he has played a significant role in fostering the growth and development of the dojo from its early days, sharing his knowledge and passion for karate with newcomers and helping to build a strong sense of community among its members.
Praise for Sensei Ricky:
"Sensei Ricky is awesome because he explains things well. He is so smart and helpful to everyone. He makes hard things seem doable."
Sensei Samuel Davila
Our most experienced Sensei, who has dedicated a significant portion of his life to martial arts, has been practicing Karate since the 1970s. Initially, he began his journey with Tae Kwon Do, where he developed a strong foundation in the fundamentals of martial arts. However, he soon transitioned to Shotokan JKA, where he honed his skills and deepened his understanding of Karate. In 2004, he became a valued member of the Shotokan Karate Alliance (SKA), further refining his technique and expertise. In 2018, he joined our school, ZBK, where he has since played a crucial role in helping to nurture and develop the children in our La Mirada dojo. His wealth of knowledge and experience continues to inspire our young students as they learn and grow in their martial arts journey. He is proof that karate isn't just a sport, but a lifestyle.
Praise for Sensei Sammy:
"Sensei Sammy shows us that anyone can do karate and do a good job. Karate is a lifestyle and Sensei Sammy is proof of that."

Senpai Kevin Gonzalez
Kevin began his karate journey in 2015, quickly developing a deep passion for the sport. Over the years, his dedication and hard work has led him to compete at prestigious national and international events. In 2019, he participated in the U.S. Open Karate Championship, earning 2nd place in both kata and kumite, an achievement recognized on the U.S. Open website. His competitive career also includes participation in Nikkei Games, national competitions, and the Nacionales Conade 2022 in La Paz, Mexico.
To further refine his skills, Kevin has trained under renowned karate figures, attending seminars with Sakura Kokumai, Adam Kraus, Brian Hilliard, and Joseph Tolentino. Beyond competing, he is now pursuing a new role in the sport, officiating. In February 2025, he tested for a national judging certification, marking an important step in his journey to give back to the sport he loves. As both a competitor and aspiring judge, Kevin continues to embody dedication, discipline, and a deep respect for karate.
